It is important to understand that investor success and investment success are not the same and require controlling for different factors for a rewarding outcome. While behavioral coaching is an oft-used means for coping with client emotions, it is often used reactively, rather than proactively. Behavioral coaching in the moment is most effective when clients have been prepared in advance. Don Bennyhoff, CFA has worked in the financial services industry since 1991. He most recently served as Chief Investment Officer and Chairman of the Investment Committee for a $1.7 billion RIA prior to its sale. He helped oversee the firm’s investment and portfolio construction methodology, created investment collateral (market commentary, blogs, articles), and routinely participated in media interviews in support of the firm’s growth and brand-awareness initiatives. He was also responsible for enhancing the investment acumen of the firm’s financial advisors and engaged in client meetings to support financial advisors, enhance client relationships, and build high levels of client trust.
Prior to that, Don retired from Vanguard after nearly 23 years, where he worked as a Senior Investment Strategist and was a co-creator and co-author of Vanguard Advisor’s Alpha™ research. During his Vanguard career, Don led a research team responsible for expanding Vanguard's work on investor behavior and behavioral coaching, and for creating Vanguard’s ETF model portfolio solutions for financial advisor usage. He was a speaker and ambassador at some of Vanguard’s most important venues, and regularly engaged with Vanguard’s public relations team and the press. Don has contributed content to various media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Investment News, Financial Planning, Market Watch, and CNN, among others.
Don is a father of four, a grandfather of three (so far), and a husband of one (since 1990). He also supports the fantastic efforts of the Teton Regional Land Trust, the Native Fish Coalition, and Reel Recovery. An avid fly fisherman, he can be found ‘standing in a river, waving a stick’ as often as time allows.
